We all know that there is a price when it comes to moving homes between packing, transporting the items and furniture… the dinars could pile up. Here are a few tips that will help you save your money when moving (because spending it on new items for the house is actually a lot more fun!)
1. Boxes:
If you go to any corner store or even the bigger establishments, you might get your hands on some boxes to pack your items in. It sure beats having to pay for a box you’re only going to be using once!
2. Ask for help:
Have a family member or friend with a big car or truck? Ask for their help! You can save a lot of money by moving the items yourself, instead of paying a company or someone else to do it.
3. Haggle:
If you do end up hiring someone to do the job, haggle for the price! You might get a discount, within reason, and save some money.
4. Use items you already have:
Yes, boxes will be needed for your move, but before you load them up, use the items you already have at home. Suitcases, storage units, etc.… these can take up a lot of items and you’re going to be moving them anyway, so it’s a win-win situation!
5. Time it wisely:
Usually, the end of the month or the week are high demand periods for moving. Try moving on a random day of the week and mid-month. It’ll save you some money especially when hiring someone to do the job.
6. Divide the tasks:
If you are hiring someone for the move, then hire them for only a portion of the job. For example, do all the packing and unpacking yourself, but just hire a truck drive to actually load, unload and move your belongings.
7. Let go of things you don’t need:
Before moving, do a thorough clean-up of the items you don’t need and donate those that are in good shape to your local charity. Not only will you be doing a good deed, but you’ll also be moving homes with less clutter.
8. Ask about hidden fees:
This applies to just about everything! Will your movers be charging you anything extra for example, if the transport runs later in the evening or night? Can you place your items at the new home a few days earlier? Will the new home be cleaned, or do you need to do a deep clean before moving? Keep all this in mind to budget accordingly!
